History

OSU was established in 1870 by the Ohio General Assembly through President Lincoln’s Land-Grant Act. It was originally called the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College. Its formative years were marked by a controversial curriculum debate. One group calling itself the “narrow gauge” believed it should live up to its name and teach only agriculture and mechanical arts, while another, the”broad gauge,” wanted to expand to other areas.

The debate led to hostile relations with the state's agricultural department. The situation was further aggravated with competition for resources against two other universities, Ohio University and Miami University. The broad gauge ultimately prevailed with an 8-7 vote among its Board of Trustees. aThe school produced its first graduating class, composed of six men, eight years after its founding. It was also renamed Ohio State University in the same year.
