Welcome

Open Congress is a public resource website under development that connects citizens to what is happening in Congress. The current site brings together government and non-profit data with blog and press coverage for a comprehensive "snapshot" of every congressional bill. But to truly narrow the gap between the access and engagement levels of Congressional insiders and average citizens, we need to be able to add detail and richness that doesn't come from the public data sources. When people view a bill on Open Congress they will see not just data but also the real story behind the bill.

In addition to introducing typical organization and search features to help people find the bills they are looking for, we are seeking funding to develop these features:

All the Best Data

We're already bringing together data from the government and from opensecrets.org. We've also added a section for recent blog posts that mention a particular bill. Soon we'll be adding a similar section for newspaper articles. We want Open Congress to be a single source for all the best information related to a bill. But some of what people need to know doesn't yet exist, which is why we'll also be adding collaborative analysis and messageboard features.
