Northwestern University offers students a full range of both Undergraduate and Graduate programs to choose from. While it doesn’t rank in the top 10, it is right up there competing with those schools. Many students who are looking for a great college to attend select Western University over higher ranking colleges because of the personalized attention they receive and due to the acceptance of diverse cultures on the campus.

With some of the fiercest competition for enrollment, students realize the honor of being able to attend the Northwestern University. Not only will they get a quality education, but they will receive in a campus that is dedicated to excellence and equality.

History

Northwestern University is located in Evanston, Illinois where it was founded in 1851 by John Evans and opened its doors to students in 1855. The school did not allow women to attend until 1873 when it opened a separate program under the name the Evanston College for Women.

Programs

Northwestern University offers a variety of programs to choose from including Medicine, Law, Management, Engineering, Journalism, Education, and Music. These programs are offered to both Undergraduates and Graduates so Bachelors and Masters Degrees can be earned here.

The programs at Northwestern University rank 14th in the Nation as a whole in regards to the Undergraduate programs offered. It is ranked in the top 20 schools for the best theatre and best college newspaper.

Student Body

Northwestern University takes pride in being able to offer their campus to one of the most diverse populations of any college campus in the Nation. To help ensure each ethnic group is well represented and allowed to share their values and cultures, they offer a large selection of diversity groups including Hispanic & Latino Affairs, African American Affairs, and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Support Network.

There are currently more than 22,000 students enrolled in both Undergraduate and Graduate programs at the University. The campus offers many activities to help students remain in shape both physically and mentally. In 2005, it was named the fittest college in the Nation.

The competition for enrollment is tremendous with approximately 15,000 new students applying each year for about 1,900 slots available. The overall secondary school rankings for the incoming freshman are in the 94 percentile. Approximately 1/3 of all incoming freshman rank high enough to be place into advanced programs upon their enrollment.

Media Attention

While Northwestern University is well known for its academic programs, most people seem to remember it in association with the Unabomber attacks that took place in 1978. Another attack also took place in 1979. Both were well publicized by the media.

Many Alumni of Northwestern University have gone on to achieve great things. The most recent is Charles Taylor, a Philosopher as well as a teacher at the University. He has been awarded the 2007 Templeton Prize for his efforts involving people and violence. He also talks about how religion, society, and morals play an important role in preventing violent behaviors from occurring.
