Newmont.com is dedicated to one of the top gold producers in the world, Newmont Mining. For this company, going for the gold certainly takes on a literal meaning.

With its strategic acquisitions in Canada, Bolivia, and Australia, Newmont has soared ahead of AngloGold Ashanti and joined Barrick as the world’s top gold producers, with an output of about eight million ounces of gold every year and probable reserves of over 94 million ounces of gold.

Aside from gold, the company also mines other metals such as silver, copper and zinc. Half of Newmont’s total production is delivered by its operations in North America and South America. Its mining facilities in Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Uzbekistan also make substantial contributions.

Newmont employs over 34,000 people worldwide and operates in five continents, including some of the best gold districts in the world. Newmont has a number of new mine projects underway. The company is also committed to environmental management and the healthand safety of its employees and the communities where it operates.

Newmont was established in New York City in 1921 and has been active on the New York Stock Exchange since 1925 and is also trading on the Australian and Toronto stock exchanges. Its headquarters are located in Denver, Colorado.

As of the fiscal year ending December 2006, the company recorded sales of $4,987.0 million and net income of $791.0 million, representing 145.7% growth. Newmont had around 15,000 employees at that time.

Operations

Newmont.com features an impressive run-down of the company's operations all over the world. An overview is as follows.

In North America, Newmont has operations in Nevada and Sonora, Mexico. The region accounted for about 45% of the company's global gold sales as of July 2007 and almost 35% of its global gold reserves in 2006.

In South America, Newmont casts a big shadow as the largest producer of gold in the continent. It has mines in Bolivia and Peru as well as an on-going exploration program that covers the entire region.

In Australia and New Zealand, the company's presence began only in February 2002 with the acquisition of Normandy Mining, which immediately made Newmont the largest gold producer in Australia. Its operations are mainly in Western Australia, Queensland, the Northern Territory and the North Island of New Zealand.

In Indonesia, Newmont invested over 10 years on a volcanic islands operation before it opened its first mine, Minahasa, in 1996. Its Batu Hijau mine on Sumbawa island produced a large copper-gold shipment in 1999. As one of the world's most widely used metals, copper is a valuable resource in the construction, electrical utility, communications and transportation industries and has many manufacturing, industrial and consumer applications.

In Ghana, Newmont acquired the Ahafo and the Akyem projects when it purchased Normandy Mining in February 2002. Both explorations have been huge successes. Their combined reserves have ballooned to 20.3 million ounces a year in end-2006 compared to just 3.3 million ounces in 2002.
