Title

Mountain Pacific Sports Federation

Description

The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) was established in 1992 to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences and other selected universities in the western United States, and to provide championship competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. The Federation has served as an incubator for emerging women's sports and as a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. Beginning its 14th year of competition, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation successfully manages the ever-changing face of college sports by fostering contraction and expansion of its intercollegiate athletics portfolio to meet the dynamic needs of its member institutions and conferences.

During the 2005-2006 season, the MPSF will oversee nine Olympic sports while serving approximately 1500 student-athletes and 80 head coaches from 32 universities in 12 western states. All MPSF teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in men's soccer, men's and women's water polo, men's and women's indoor track and field, men's and women's gymnastics, women's lacrosse and men's volleyball. All MPSF champions are eligible to compete in NCAA Championships with MPSF men's soccer, men's and women's water polo, and men's volleyball champions earning automatic qualification into NCAA championship events.

In 2004-2005, four MPSF teams won NCAA championships with over a dozen teams and hundreds of student-athletes competing in NCAA post-season competition. UCLA won NCAA titles in both men's and women's water polo, with Pepperdine University winning the NCAA men's volleyball championship and University of Oklahoma regaining the NCAA title in men's gymnastics. In men's soccer, the University of New Mexico was ranked No. 1 in the nation for several weeks before taking a double overtime 0-0 draw against Virginia in the third-round of the NCAA tournament, with the Cavaliers advancing to the quarterfinals by winning the penalty tiebreaker against the Lobos. In addition to the twin NCAA water polo titles, UCLA also won the MPSF men's indoor track and field championship for the fourth-consecutive year, with Stanford taking the women's title for the third straight season. Stanford won MPSF championships in men's water polo, women's indoor track and field and women's lacrosse with Sacramento State taking the women's gymnastics championship for the third time in four seasons
