MongaBay - Tropical Rainforest Conservation
Mongabay.com aims to raise interest in wildlife and wildlands while promoting awareness of environmental issues. Originally the site was based around a text on tropical rainforests (see the article "A Place Out of Time: Tropical Rainforests - Their Wonders and the Perils They Face") developed by Rhett Buttler over a four year period (1996-2000), but today the site has expanded in a number of different directions. In 2004 Rhett developed WildMadagascar.org to focus on the incredible biodiversity of Madagascar; in 2005 he released a kids version of the rainforest site.
Since it's beginning, MongaBay.com has rapidly emerged on the world scale as a go-to site for the most recent and relevant information about the environment. Competitors include TreeHugger.com, ENN.com, and Grist.org.
Business Model
MongaBay.com is supported almost entirely by advertising revenue, though users are welcome to make financial and content contributions.

- Let's keep the nomination open because there's heat here (or a couple of staff likes it), but this page hasn't been worked on in four months, and I don't really see why it's a great page. The page was edited by an anoymous IP who hasn't been back since May 22, it was nominated by Chris a few days later and I've never seen any overwhelming reason to pick this over any of the other strong candidates who are actively trying to build something and working hard to do so. But that's just my opinion, the what differentiates it from any of the other candidates? -- TakKendrick
