Island Records was founded in Jamaica in 1959 by Chris Blackwell and soon became synonymous with reggae and the music of Bob Marley. Island's legendary reputation was further cemented in the 80s as the home of musical icons U2. Traffic, Robert Palmer, Jethro Tull, The Cranberries Melissa Etheridge and PJ Harvey also signed to the label and Island's reputation as an artist-focused home never wavered. . In 1999 several other labels were put under the Island label umbrella adding such top artists to the roster as Bon Jovi, Lionel Richie, Def Leppard and many more.
