The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. is a company that deals in education, broadcasting, and financial services, publishing and business services. It is a publicly traded company (NYSE: MHC) with headquarters in Rockefeller Centre in New York City. History

The company was started by James H. Mc Graw in 1888 after the purchase of American Journal of Railway Appliances. A number of publications were added which lead to the foundation of McGraw Publishing. John A. Hill was the co-founder of the company and had numerous technical and trade publications. In 1902, Hill formed his own company, The Hill Publishing Company. Hill and Mc Graw merged, which resulted in the formation The Mc Graw-Hill Book Company. Mr. Hill served as a president of the company while Mr. Mc Graw was vice president. In this merger the book departments of both companies were combined. McGraw-Hill Publishing Company, Inc became The McGraw-Hill Companies in 1995, as part of a corporate identity brand.
