Title

Marian College - Strong Foundations. Remarkable Futures.

Description

I hope you and your family had a wonderful Easter. As the Lenten season ends, we are given the opportunity to reflect on and renew our faith during the Easter season. The Marian College community is also preparing to bring the academic year to a close with commencement ceremonies on May 6. This year John Lechleiter, chief operating officer of Eli Lilly and Company, will give the commencement address to the largest graduating class in the history of the college. And, planning for the 2006-07 academic year is underway.

A week ago, the faculty of Marian College approved two landmark changes that will contribute greatly to improving the academic experience and quality of life for our students. The first is approval of a new course, COL 111: Freshman Experience Program. With this approval, Marian College will join the nearly 80% of U.S. colleges to offer such a program to its students. Designed as a joint program between Academic and Student Affairs, our course will give our incoming freshman a common academic experience that will unite them with Marian's heritage, mission, services, and structure. Over 20 faculty members have already expressed an interest in teaching for the fall 2006 semester. Many people have made great contributions to this effort, which was ably coordinated by Dr. James Norton.

The second is an innovative academic program that is the first of its kind in the Midwest and only the second in the entire United States: a program in motorsport management. The program is designed like Marian's Centers of Learning so that it can be coupled with other majors (as a minor for students outside the Department of Sports Studies and as a concentration for students within the department) and will have a strong emphasis on hands-on learning. In addition to offering an academic program that will give graduates an impressive competitive advantage in a rapidly growing industry with a lot of "horsepower," this new program will help distinguish Marian College as an important partner for Indiana's highly-touted economic development initiative around the motorsports industry. Dr. Leigh Ann Danzey-Bussell has been deeply committed to developing this innovative curriculum and will direct the program; it begins in the fall 2006 semester and student interest has been very strong thus far.
