The origin of LGW Limited goes back to the year 1933 when Late Pragdas Gupta the great grand father of the present Directors founded Laxmi Glass Works as a small proprietorship unit for doing wholesale business in various types of glass wares and glass based decorating items and imitation Jewellery .The firm soon became the market leader in both East and West Bengal in undivided India. After the death of Pragdas Gupta his son Late Kali Charan Gupta took over the business and continued till his death in 1987. Meanwhile his elder son Sanjay Kumar Gupta also joined the family business in 1973 and by his hard work regained the lost market in East Bengal, now known as Bangladesh, an independent Country. After the demise of Kali Charan Gupta his sons Sanjay Kumar Gupta, Amit Kumar Gupta, Abhay Kumar Gupta and Pankaj Kumar Gupta converted the firm to a private Limited company and then as a Limited company in the year 1995 and brought in complete modernization and new approach in the business giving full thrust to Merchant Export Business. From 1996 onwards the company made tremendous progress in merchant exports and one by one secured prestigious Export House and Trading House status from Govt. of India and became country's number one merchant exporter in Cotton Yarn and won two gold trophies from The Cotton Textile Export Promotion Council for excellent export performance for the year 1998-99 & also won Gold, Silver and Bronze Trophies for the year 2000-01, 2001-02.
Prior to partition of Bengal during British rule the firm was having regular business links with the erstwhile East Bengal in undivided India as a domestic supplier from 1933-1947. The original business of the firm was in the area of jewellery various types of plastic goods including imitation jewellery etc in which the firm was a market leader in Calcutta. After birth of Bangladesh as an independent country, the firm started exporting its items to that country since 1973 and gradually made strong foothold in the Bangladesh market and also started export of various other items like Chemicals, minerals, engineering goods, and textile goods as merchant exporter. In the meantime Bangladesh become a major exporter of readymade garments and knitted fabrics to the European and American Markets by virtue of being a non quota country .In the process large scale modern production units for readymade garments/knitted fabrics came up in Bangladesh who started generating huge demand for Indian Cotton yarn and Fabrics as Raw materials for ultimate export of finished goods (Readymade garments) from Bangladesh to European & American Markets.
