Organized in 1968 under the laws of the state of Indiana, Lincoln National Corporation is one of the largest holding companies. The company operates multiple insurance and investment management businesses through subsidiary companies. Lincoln Financial Group is the marketing name for LNC and its subsidiaries. Through its different business segments, the company markets a wide range of wealth protection and accumulation products. The most important subsidiaries of LNC are The Lincoln National Life Insurance Company, First Penn-Pacific Life Insurance Company, Lincoln Life & Annuity Company of New York, Delaware Management Holdings, Lincoln National (UK), Lincoln Financial Advisors (LFA) and Lincoln Financial Distributors (LFD).

History

In 1902, Wilbur Wynant founded the Fraternal Assurance Society of America, a mutual organization where surviving members contributed to the death benefits of the deceased members. In 1905, this society was restructured into a stock company and obtained an approval to use Lincoln’s name. The first policy of the company was written in 1905 and through a series of acquisitions, the company expanded further specializing in risk assessment. In 1968, the company formed the holding company Lincoln National and started diversifying its interests. The company bought Chicago Title and Trust and other life and reinsurance companies. Eventually, the firm also entered health benefits business with its own HMO and investing in EMPHESYS.

In the following years, the company purchased Delaware Management Holdings, Laurentian Financial Group, UNUM’s group tax-qualified annuity business, Voyageur Fund Managers, CIGNA’s annuity and individual life insurance business, and Aetna’s US individual life insurance operations. Moving to Philadelphia in the year 1999, the company sold its individual disability income business and reinsurance operations. In 2002, the company acquired Administrative Management Group (AMG), an employee benefits record-keeping firm. AMG is a strategic partner of LNC’s retirement segment and offers record keeping services for the Lincoln Alliance Program, apart from 400 other clients nationwide. In 2004, the company signed an agreement to sell Delaware International Advisors to Hellman & Friedman Corporation.

In 2006, the company acquired Jefferson-Pilot Corporation thereby expanding its interests into group life, disability, and dental insurance divisions. In addition to this, Lincoln Financial also acquired Jefferson-Pilot's television and radio operations, renaming it as Lincoln Financial Media. With this acquisition, the group owns 18 radio stations in Charlotte, Miami, San Diego, Denver, and Atlanta. Also, the company owns WBTV, WCSC-TV, and WWBT.
