Kutztown University has come a long way from its beginnings in 1866. That first year there were 11 faculty members teaching a student body of 318, of whom only 55 were women.
Also at that time there were three majors listed in the catalog: the Elementary Course, the Scientific Course, and the Classical Course. Alas, there were not enough classes offered in Latin and Greek to allow anyone to complete that course, and it was eliminated in 1877.
Today Kutztown University is leading a path of academic excellence into the 21st century. The university today boasts a faculty of approximately 500, with a student body nearing 10,000, of whom more than 6,000 are women. The university now comprises more colleges than there were majors offered in those early days, and now offers 70 bachelor's degrees and 15 master's degrees.
