History

Kohl's was originally founded by the Kohl family in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the year 1962 with its first store located in Brookfield, WI. In 1978 The Kohl's Corporation became fully owned by the BATUS Retail Group, which is a subsidiary of British-American Tobacco Company. At that time the company operated fifty grocery stores, 6 departmental stores, three liquor stores and three drug stores.

The Kohl family, headed by Herb and Allen Kohl, stayed to manage the affairs of the company. The family left the company’s management in 1979, and from thereon Herb Kohl went on to become a senator of United States and owner of the Milwaukee Bucks. The company continued its expansion and in 1992 it made the biggest initial public stock offering that was ever made by a Wisconsin company. With time, the company continued to open many stores in different parts of the country and in 1998; it entered the S&P 500 list. It also got listed in the Fortune 500 at 152nd position in 2007. Kohl's design office that opened in January 2007 is located in the centre of New York's Garment District.
