Solidarity Calendar – August 2008

Upcoming Actions:

Sunday, August 10th, 7-10am, West side of the Hawthorne Bridge,Providence Bridge Pedal Action: Join SEIU Local 49 as they stand up for fairness for Providence workers in this fun action. Call Will at (503)939-4290 with questions.

Thursday, August 14th, Starbucks on NW 23rd & Overton, Emanuel Contract Leaflet: Emanuel workers are the lowest-paid in the Legacy system, which leads to high staff turnover and jeopardizes quality patient care. Workers at Good Sam, right across the river, have higher pay raises in the last three years than workers at Emanuel. Emanuel caregivers want a one-year contract so they can bargain together with fellow union members at Good Samaritan. This leaflet will involve SEIU members from Emanuel and Good Sam and is aimed at letting the public know about Legacy's unfair treatment. Leaflets at 7:30am, 2:30pm, 3:30pm, 4:30pm or 7:30pm.

August 21st 11:30am, 921 SW 6th Ave, Smith/Schwarzenegger Protest: Gordon Smith & Arnold Schwarzenegger have pushed for expanded "free trade" deals, fought hard to bust unions and dismantle public services while advocating tax breaks for the wealthy. Other News:

Hilton workers win a great victory! The workers will vote on the contract proposal next week, but in the meantime they are dancing in the halls celebrating.

Legacy organizing: The campaign to organize Legacy nurses is moving ahead with nurses circulating a petition for the union in all the hospitals. One way you can support the nurses' organizing is by having a lawn sign. Call Rob Painter-Johnson at 503-481-6543 and he can get you a lawn sign. You can also help by talking to Rob about canvassing the hospital's neighbors and asking if they will put up a lawn sign.
