Company History

1969 – The J. B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. was founded in 1961. The headquarters is located at Lowell, Arkansas. The company started operating with seven refrigerated trailers and five trucks.

1983 – 1,320,000 shares of common stock were offered to public. The same year, it was ranked as United States’ 80th largest carrier. The revenue boosted up by fifty six percent over the period of one year and exceeded $63 million. At that time 1, 050 people were working with the company which owned 1,049 trailers and 550 tractors.

1985 – To the existing list of major terminals California, Arkansas, New Jersey and Ohio was added. The rank of the company soared up to 37th largest carrier in United States. More people joined the band-wagon. A total of 2,291 worked in 1985. The number of trailers and tractors also improved and there were a total of 2,468 trailers and 1,236 tractors.

1987 – Revenues also increased so as to attain the goal of becoming the United States’ 2nd largest carrier. The company became the largest publicly held truckload carrier. 5,170 employees were hired to handle 5,454 trailers and 2,544 tractors.

1990 – The corporate headquarters were shifted to Lowell, Arkansas. Business Month magazine ranked J. B. as the 50th fastest growing company. Over a decade, the percentage grew to 2,000. A whooping 12,389 employees worked with the company. And 10,563 trailers and 4,729 tractors were operated.

1992 – J.B. Hunt Logistics, Inc. was formed so as to meet logistics needs of the customers. Hunt/IBM on-board computer systems were installed. TMM/Hunt de Mexico agreement was signed with Mexico’s largest maritime steamship company. 11,284 people were working with the company now and the company operated 17,391 trailers and 7,004 tractors.

1993 – J.B. Hunt Dedicated Contract Services was formed to handle outsourcing requirements of the customers. Revenues hit a top level of $1 billion. Nine railway companies were included in the rail partnership.10, 430 people worked for the company and 19,089 trailers & 6,775 tractors were operated.

1995 – The Intermodal loads shoots up by 24 percent and eighty ramp locations were being serviced. Contract Services offered 1,276 employees, 1,630 trailers, and 970 tractors. The company had 12,020 employees and 24,618 trailers & 7,706 tractors.

1997 – Driver wages were incremented by 33 percent. But the driver turnover decreased by 60 percent. J. B. Hunt is honored by Computer World by stating the company’s name in “Top 100 Premiere Internet User,” along with “Top 16 IT Training Shops” and “Top 25 Places to Work in IT”. The company receives the prestigious award of User Excellence Award from Network World magazine. Along with employing 11,782 people, the company operated 31,391 trailers and 7,508 tractors.

1999 – J.B. Hunt is named as the “Truckload Carrier of the Year” by Wal-Mart. The company is honored by Dayton Hudson with not one but three “Commitment to Quality” awards for outstanding performance. Revenue crossed the $2 billion mark. 14,700 employees were working with the company and 39,470 trailers & 9,460 tractors were operated.

2000 – J.B. Hunt Logistics, Inc. merged with rest six logistics units in order to form Transplace, which later became the leading Internet-based supply chain management company. The DCS division became the fastest growing dedicated contract carriage provider in North America, with a 45 percent growth per annum. Along with the operation of 44,310 trailers & 10,650 tractors, 15,980 people were employed.

2001 – To provide a higher degree of customer service, Truck and Intermodal divisions were split. Again, Computer World selected J.B. Hunt as a “Top 100 Places to Work in IT” for the fifth consecutive year. J.B. Hunt is named “Outbound Carrier of the Year” by Target Corporation. The company launched a new and interactive website. Nearly 16,380 employees worked with the company and 44,320 trailers & 10,770 tractors were operated.

2002 – J.B. Hunt is honored with “Dry Van Grocery Carrier of the Year” award by Wal-Mart. Target Corporation also named the company as “Outbound Carrier of the Year” for second year in a row. J.B. Hunt and Freightliner announced agreement to swap cabover fleet with new conventional tractors.16, 265 employees worked for the company and 45,759 trailers & 10,653 tractors operated.

2003 – Forbes magazine named the company among Platinum 400 of America’s best managed companies. Training magazine named the company among the list of Training Top 100.J.B. Hunt is named by Bloomberg Personal Finance magazine among the list of Top 100 best stocks. J.B. Hunt declared 2-for-1 stock split. Along with the operation of 46,146 trailers & 9,900 tractors, 15,700 people were employed.

2004 – J.B. Hunt was presented with Excellent Supplier Award by PPG Industries. Forbes magazine named the company among Platinum 400 of America’s best managed companies for second consecutive year. J.B. Hunt is ranked fourth on list of Best Places to Work in IT by Computer World magazine.
