Real Agile Developers Deliver Value
Cedric makes some good points in his blog post, Agile people still don't get it. But, he is really just lashing out at the few "talking head" agilistas who write books and collect fat consulting fees. Many of these guys don't work on real-world projects anymore and are always looking for the latest bandwagon to lead. Maybe his post will spur the agile community to give up the zealotry and slogans that turn off so many experienced software engineers.
I agree that pat statements such as, "If it is not tested, it doesn't exist," are only good for emphasis of your point—through absurdity. The actual statement should be, "if it is not tested, it is at higher risk of breaking."
But, with that said, Agile practices work. No matter the hype. Well-executed XP projects tend to have great success and happy customers. TDD, pair programming, the planning game, are all fundamentally about developers delivering the most value for the least cost. On a real XP project, this is the underlying assumption that developers feed on. The actual practices just enable this delivery of value.
