Description

"I started working for Ithaca Gun in 1971 shortly after the company had been sold to General Recreation. The company had been founded and run by the Smith family up until that time, but the manufacturing plant was becoming obsolete and needed a large infusion of cash to modernize...I became aware of just how obsolete our plant was when I saw photographs of the Perazzi and SKB factories. I didn't know what all the machines were, but I did notice there were no pile of speedy-dry on the floors to catch leaking oil and coolant...[describes the succession of owners and how modernization of the manufacturing facility did not occur]...Unfortunately, we didn't have the equipment to make a profit at the price we were selling guns. When we ran out of both money and credit, the company went bankrupt."

"The new owners are Craig and Floyd Marshall. They are the first owners since the Smith family to have started and operated a successful machining operation. They already have a state of the art machining facility, and they employ machinists capable of competing with the best in the world in a very competitive field. The one thing which first convinced me that this company would be capable of moving the Ithaca Gun tradition forward was the Mar-Metal website. It described how one of their machinists had been sent off to school to learn the latest in cutting tool technology. There were photographs of the tools he came back with. The tools looked like nothing I had ever seen, but they were said to cut very fast and leave a great finish on the parts. That is what I wanted to hear. Ithaca Gun had never had any competitive tooling and never even looked for the best available. The M37 receivers coming off those machines now are the best ever made. Not only are they dead accurate to print, but the finish is so good that they will only need a final finish polish. There are no tool marks that need to be removed before a finish polish can be put on the part. Internally the finish is equally good. The guns as first assembled function as smoothly as a broken-in gun used to. The barrels and other machined parts are equally good. Mold Craft machinists are used to working in tolerances measured in tenths of thousandths of an inch, and nobody in the firearms industry gets that kind of accuracy. The traditional hand fitting on fine firearms is there to compensate for machining inadequacies. Ithaca Guns USA has right now the technical ability to produce the best sporting arms in the world."

We have for sale both books written by Mr. Snyder on Ithaca Guns. The one that is pictured to the right is the general history of the company; it is generously illustrated and is extremely informative on topics ranging from key personalities involved in the company to precise date of manufacture and model variations on the double guns and single barrel trap guns. Snyder's other book focuses on the Model 37 pump action shotgun. Please click on the picture to the right to see example pages from the books and get prices.
