Common Chemical Components in Perfumes & Their Impact

According to the US law fragrance is defined as a combination of chemicals that add a unique scent to a perfume or cologne. These ingredients can be derived from natural raw materials or petroleum, or might even be created synthetically. Fragrance houses are the actual creators of fragrances which are then purchased by perfume manufacturers and mixed to create unique scents. Some cologne and perfume companies also use human pheromones in their products without the knowledge of the average consumer.

The chemical combinations are protected and kept as trade secrets and not the chemicals used. The stabilizers, solvents, dyes, UV absorbers and preservatives are all listed on the label. So what is a fragrance? It is typically made up of:

  • Parabens: These synthetic preservatives are known for interfering with hormone creation and release.

  • Phthalates: These chemicals are synthetic preservatives that are carcinogenic in nature and also affect the reproductive system. Some of its effects are early breast development, decrease in sperm count, birth defects and kidney and liver damage.

  • Synthetic musk: These chemicals affect hormones and lead to disruption in their creation and release. They also accumulate in body fat, the environment, breast milk and umbilical cord blood.

  • Synthetic human pheromones. They are absorbed through the skin and are capable of interfering with the natural production of ectohormones (or pheromones) produced by the bodies sweat glands.

According to reports of Environmental Working Group, by analyzing the chemical components of the aforementioned chemicals one can come to the conclusion that they are harmful for one’s body and equal to toxins.

Individuals suffering from asthma should be aware that most fragrance formulas contain common allergens that trigger asthma. Similar chemicals are used as components of air fresheners, scented candles and cleaning products.

Individuals might often purchase non-scented or fragrance free products however, it is only the labels which say it is unscented, where in reality another strong chemical might have been added to mask the original smell.

Widespread impact of fragrances

Have you ever felt dizzy or gotten a headache when someone sitting close to you is drenched in perfume. Some other symptoms that you might experience in such situations are fatigue, confusion, nauseous and irritable. This means that you are chemically sensitive to fragrances and it is actually quite common, even though it does appear so. Thus, every time an individual wears perfume he/she and everyone around him/her are affected. Regardless of one’s choice he/she will be affected if an individual is wearing perfume in their vicinity.

Alternatives

There are natural alternatives while using which one does not have to worry about its impact on health or environment. Natural essential oils are the best alternatives in such cases as do not contain any harmful synthetic chemicals and are formed using natural raw materials.
