Description
St. Boniface Hospital is a 28-bed facility with a 24-hour Emergency Room and an Operating Room in the area of Fond des Blancs, Haiti. The Hospital serves a population of 45,000 rural poor. Each month, an average of 2,600 ouptatients are seen in our hospital clinics. It is the only healthcare facility in this wide area.
The most common conditions seen include malnutrition, anemia, hypertension, malaria, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, intestinal parasites and a variety of other infections. Hospital admissions cover a broad range of problems from severe malnutrition and pneumonia in children to congestive heart failure and burns in adults.
Pregnant women receive regular prenatal care. We are very fortunate to have a full-time obstetrician/gynecologist. Caesarean deliveries are now possible for mothers and babies who would otherwise have died because of complicated pregnancies. A comprehensive nutrition program is in place for pregnant women and children in need.
