The Gryphon Theatre Foundation was incorporated in 1970 following the first season of the Gryphon Theatre Company. The mandate was to promote the performing arts in the Huronia area and to develop the Gryphon Theatre Company to a professional theatre for the region.
Originally operating out of the Collier Street United Church Hall in downtown Barrie, Gryphon theatre moved to its present location at Georgian College Theatre when the college was opened in 1973.
For many years Gryphon Theatre operated solely as a summer company, producing five plays over a ten-week season, which ran from June to September. In recent years, Gryphon Theatre has expanded this summer format so that it now operates year round. During the winter months, Gryphon now presents two series: an adult Headliner Series which offers the best in touring theatre and music, and Theatre for Kids presented for family audiences.
