Great Lakes Cichlid Society is a nonprofit organization, chartered in the State of Ohio. We are dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of information relating to the biology of fishes the the family Cichlidae with a particular emphasis on maintenance and breeding in the aquarium.

Cichlids (pronounced: sick-lids), are colorful and interesting perch-like fished of the family Cichlidae. They are found in the tropical freshwater of Africa, South and Central America, India, Sri Lanka and Madagascar. There are a dazzling array of shapes, colors and forms of Cichlids. There are approximately 1500 species known to science, with most of these found in the Great Rift Lakes of Eastern Africa -- Lakes Malawi, Tanganyika and Victoria. Aside from their beautiful colors, which often resemble marine reef fishes, what makes these fishes popular with hobbyists are their interesting reproductive behavior. Cichlids exhibit elaborate courtship rituals, often form a pair bond and practice parental care of their eggs and young (known as fry). some species are egg layers, depositing their eggs on rocks, in caves and in shells. Cichlids are easily bred in the aquarium where hobbyists can watch these interesting behaviors firsthand. For that reason, Cichlids have become the most popular of tropical aquarium fishes.
