General Motors Corporation (NYSE: GM) and its subsidiaries develop, produce, and market of vehicles and vehicle parts on a worldwide basis. Founded in 1908, General Motors today is the largest automobile manufacturer in the world. With headquarters in Detroit, Michigan, General Motors manufactures automobiles in thirty three countries around the world and employs approximately 284,000 people.

The General Motors product line features s a diverse selection of automobiles, including small, midsize, sports, and luxury cars; and pickup, van, utilities, and medium duty trucks. General Motors has for regions through which its vehicles are marketed. The four regions are General Motors North America, General Motors Europe, General Motors Latin America/Africa/Mid-East and General Motors Asia/Pacific.

General Motors vehicles are marketed internationally under 13 different model names: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Daewoo, Holden, GMC, Hummer, Isuzu, Opel, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, and Vauxhall. During the year 2006, 9.1 million new General Motors cars, trucks, and vans were sold around the world.

Additional Products and Services

General Motors offers after sale products and services. For example, general motors markets a full line of vehicle accessories and parts. Brand names under which General motors parts and accessories are marketed include: Genuine GM, GM Performance Parts, GM Goodwrench, and ACDelco. GM Powertrain is the brand name for General Motors engines and transmissions. OnStar, the leading brand of GPS navigation, security, and information systems, for automobiles, is a subsidiary of General Motors.

In addition to vehicles and related products and services, General Motors holds and ownership interest in GMAC, which offers a number of financial services. GMAC offers consumer vehicle financing and commercial financing for automobile dealerships and other commercial enterprises. General Motors also has an ownership interest Subsidiary Residential Capital LLC and Capmark Financial group. These subsidiary interests provide services that include residential and commercial mortgage financing and insurance services that include automobile service contracts (extended warranties), personal automobile insurance coverage, and commercial insurance coverage.

Marketing Channels

General Motors products are marketed primarily via independently owned and operated retail dealerships in the North American market. At the end of 2006, General Motors had approximately 7,000 retailer dealers in the United States. Additional North American dealerships included 750 in Canada and 300 in Mexico. Throughout the rest of the world, GM products are marketed primarily through approximately 15,800 distribution outlets, which include distributors; dealers; and GM authorized sales, service, and part providers.

General Motors also sells vehicles directly to fleet customers. Fleet customers include car rental car companies, commercial fleet customers, leasing companies, and government customers.

General Motors operates manufacturing, assembly, and distribution operations in the United States, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, Sweden, Belgium, Spain, China, Thailand, Argentina, Poland, South Korea, South Africa and India.
