About GET-UP
GET-UP/AFT (Graduate Employees Together - University of Pennsylvania / American Federation of Teachers) is an organization that has grown out of the unique experience of being at once a student at and employee of this university. We've found that our experience at Penn has as much to do with the number of hours we are expected to work, how we are compensated, and even health insurance, as it does with our research, participation in conferences, and future plans as full-time professors. The fellowship you have received from Penn benefits both you and the university. It gives you financial support to do coursework and research without accumulating debt; on the other hand, it also gives the university a relatively low-cost work force. Penn's graduate work-force does seventy percent of the teaching in large undergraduate lecture/recitation courses, and contributes to much of the research that the university is known for around the world. We have a responsibility to make sure that this arrangement is fair, on both sides.
