Title

Richmond International Airport

Description

The Capital Region Airport Commission (CRAC) is an independent authority whose fourteen members are appointed by the local government jurisdictions of the City of Richmond and the Counties of Henrico, Chesterfield, and Hanover. The members direct the growth, operation, and business activities of the Richmond International Airport which has served central Virginia’s air travel needs since 1927 and continually strives to improve the quality of air service provided to all citizens of central Virginia.

Since the airport has been operated by the Commission, it has been totally self-sustaining with funds for its operation and maintenance generated by the airline companies serving the airport and from passenger-supported concessions such as auto parking, food and beverage centers, and gift shops.

The Capital Region Airport Commission recognizes the vital role it plays in helping central Virginia achieve its objective as a leader in commerce and transportation. It also understands the importance in moving forward with an aggressive program of expansion and improvements that will directly help build the economy of central Virginia as well. Beginning in 1995, the Commission requested considerable financial assistance over an approximate seven-year period from the Virginia General Assembly and the local jurisdictions, as well as the Federal Aviation Administration, to elevate the potential of the airport through a vigorous capital improvement program.
