Rabbi Uziel Milevsky, former chief rabbi of Mexico, once explained that Jewish history cannot be viewed as a straight line. Instead, our history is more like a spiral with every Jewish holiday representing a meeting in time. In this way our present is inexorably linked to the past.
For example, we celebrate Passover as if we were the ones just freed from Egyptian slavery. Hanukkah and Purim are more than a simple recounting of past miracles. They are just as much a reminder to look for the miracles that occur in our present and for the miracles that are yet to come.
Indeed, our history has been a spiral with repeating themes. Every generation has its Pharaoh, Harmon and Antiochus. Every generation has its miracles large or small.
