Description
CubaClimbing.com is first of all a website. It seeks to span general travel information to specific "how-to" for climbers, with links to almost everything available in print or on the web about Cuba.
CubaClimbing is also an environmental and humanitarian project, working in its own name and also through a non-profit project called the Cuban Environmental Leadership Project (CELP), to develop independent conservation leadership and organizations in Cuba. The objective is to equip Cuban naturalists, climbers, cavers, and other recreationists with the vision and skills necessary to protect Cuba's natural resources.
Cuba was poised to become the next hot paradise for foreigner climbers. Climbing, however, was out of reach of Cubans themselves -- where a climbing rope would cost two-years' salary. A rack, harness, and shoes would take 10-years of saving. Stepping into this gap, CubaClimbing has worked with companies willing to donate shoes, harnesses, equipment, ropes, and clothes. Individual climbers have donated their own gear and purchased additional items, such as power drills and bolts. Some visiting climbers have held fund-raisers to gear bring to Cuba.
