Concrete Hermit

Concrete Hermit is a company that works with Graphic artists: While working at the Tate Modern museum in 2004 Concrete Hermit founder Chris Knight formulated the plans that would be the foundation of the label: to create a platform that promotes interesting work fairly and with respect for both the artist and the buyer. Chris, who grew up in Leeds, had studied fine art at Glasgow School of art where his main area of interest was in how art finds its way into society, whether through traditional galleries, stickers on the street, graffiti, the internet, T-shirt graphics or advertising.

Using self-taught web programming skills Chris created the first version of www.concretehermit.com in his spare time while still working at the Tate and started selling a small range of T-shirts online and at a Sunday designer-maker market at the Truman Brewery in East London. The concept of the label as a platform for promoting artists work developed to become two series of shirts – the ‘Hermit series’ designed by Chris, and the ‘Artist Series’ featuring the work of other selected designers. ‘Artist Series’ shirts are often produced in limited editions of 100. Artists we have worked with in this series include Neasden Control Centre, Ian Stevenson, Jon Burgerman, Andrew Rae, John Slade, Motomichi Nakamura, Kate Moross, Supermundane and others. The emphasis of the promotion is on the artist, each is fully credited for their designs with links and a profile on the website. Our shirts are ethically sourced and screen printed locally in London.

The process of collaborating on T-shirt designs as a way of promoting artists work evolved in 2005 when we added badge sets and published our first book - ‘The Shut Up Man’ by Ian Stevenson.

We opened the Concrete Hermit Gallery/shop in east London in 2007. The space provides us with our own retail base – we sell our own products and a selection of prints, books, badges and artwork from local and international artists. The launch of the gallery coincided with the publication of our first book in a standard format – ‘Best Wishes Get Well Soon’. At the gallery we curate a program of exhibitions that changes monthly and we encourage the artists to experiment with structure and installation. The space gives them freedom to expand on their work and present it in new formats.

Concrete Hermit has featured in magazines such as Design Week, Creative Review, Grafik and IDN. Our T-shirts have been included in the publications ‘300% Cotton’ and ‘360º T-shirt Design’

Our products are stocked in stores both in the UK and internationally.
