About

Crews will thin the undergrowth in longleaf pine forests around Waccamaw Middle and Waccamaw Intermediate schools next week. It's part of the forest management program at Brookgreen Gardens, which owns the tracts. "The big reason is the restoration of the longleaf forest," said Helen Benso, Brookgreen's vice president of marketing. "If you don't have that, you won't have the red-cockaded woodpeckers." The woodpeckers are an endangered species that nest in old-growth longleaf pines.
