Steve Vivian, Senior Vice President and Director of Marketing and Sales, holds the Ph.D. in English Studies with a concentration in linguistics. His popular college rhetoric textbook, Writing With Authority, was published in 1989. His earliest experience with publishing was placing poetry and short fiction in small, literary magazines such as Pine River, Davidson Miscellany, and Lincoln Log. His interest in small independent publications has continued: his work appears with quasi-regularity in publications such as Circle and Impact, the latter a magazine of political and social issues. His contrarian essays in Impact produced both fan mail and hate mail. "Always a good sign," Steve believes. "Otherwise, you're saying nothing or recycling worn-out platitudes--which is also saying nothing." As one media reviewer noted, "Steve Vivian describes the hypocrisies of the right wing and the left wing pundits."

Steve's association with Boson began in 1997, when Boson accepted his satirical novel Flunky for publication. "I was pleased and even flattered that Boson accepted Flunky because Boson publishes two novels by Kelly Cherry, whose work I've long admired." Later, in 1999, Boson published A Self-Made Monster, which the author describes as "a cracked vampire narrative."
