Title

Climate Action Network, Network of Environmental NGO working on climate related policy

Description

What is Climate Action Network (CAN)?

The Climate Action Network (CAN) is a global network of over 287 Non- Governmental Organizations (NGOs) working to promote government and individual action to limit human-induced climate change to ecologically sustainable levels. CAN members work to achieve this goal through the coordination of information exchange and NGO strategy on international, regional and national climate issues. CAN has seven regional coordinating offices which co-ordinate these efforts in Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, Europe, Latin America, North America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Diverse environmental organizations from around the globe, ranging from large international groups such as World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, to small local groups in developing countries such as Terre Vivante in Mauritania and the Green Coalition in the Philippines, work collaboratively within CAN.

CAN members place a high priority on both a healthy environment and development that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (Brundtland Commission). Climate Action Network's vision is to protect the atmosphere while allowing for sustainable and equitable development worldwide.

Brief History of CAN

Since the first World Climate Conference in 1979, there has been increasing concern about possible disruptive changes to the world's climate system due to human activities. As a first step on the road to combating climate change, the 1995 Climate Change Convention (glossary) was negotiated and signed by more than 160 countries and ratified by more than 130 countries. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) calls for a stabilization of GHG emissions at 1990 levels by the year 2000 for all industrialized countries. Unfortunately, this target was only met by a few countries, and not necessarily due to climate-related policies. There is still a long way to go before strong and relevant policies and a protocol for further reduction targets will be implemented. Climate Action Network originated from a common value among NGOs to achieve these necessary changes and continues to actively pursuing this goal.
