Description

Pomona College is an independent, coeducational institution dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and understanding through study of the fine arts, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Pomona's curriculum is designed to foster independent critical thought, the acquisition of specialized knowledge and intellectual skills, and social and cultural awareness. Founded in 1887 as a college "of the New England type," Pomona has achieved a national reputation for excellence in private education. It is the founding member of The Claremont Colleges, a consortium of seven independent institutions. Residential enrollment at Pomona College is approximately 1,400. The institution considers a diverse student group to be an educational asset, and actively encourages a mix of ideas, backgrounds, and experiences in its student body. Pomona is one of a very small number of institutions that admits students entirely on their merits without regard to their ability to pay. The College's admission standards are highly selective. In 2001-02, the combined median SAT score for enrolling freshmen was 1,440. Professors, associate professors, and assistant professors hold Ph.D. degrees or appropriate terminal degrees. With a full-time faculty of approximately 170, the student-to-faculty ratio is nine-to-one. Pomona College's liberal arts curriculum, small classes, residential campus, sports and recreational facilities, and sophisticated laboratories and studios prepare students for lives of personal fulfillment and social responsibility in a global context.

CGU offers advanced work in the humanities, fine arts, mathematics, social sciences, education, management, executive management, and information science. It is a graduate-only institution, granting masters and doctoral degrees.

Scripps College, founded in 1926, is the leading women's college west of Massachusetts. With an enrollment of 768 students and an endowment of $185 million, the college emphasizes a challenging core curriculum based on interdisciplinary studies in the humanities combined with rigorous training in the disciplines. Graduates of the college pursue careers in science, medicine, finance, business, education and the arts. The entering first-year class this fall had median SAT scores of 1280, the highest in the history of the college. Moreover, the recipients of the achievement-based James E. Scripps Scholarships have a combined SAT score of 1440. Scripps is ranked number 33 among the nation's top liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report and is one of the very few colleges in the category that has less than 1,000 students. Moreover, Scripps graduates are being accepted into the nation's most competitive graduate programs and being awarded prestigious fellowships.
