Vic McWilliams is Founder, Winemaker and Director of Vineyard Operations and has been perfecting the art of winemaking and grape growing for over 25 years. After becoming a pharmacy graduate in 1974 from NDSU, Vic decided to make a name for himself in the California wine industry. In 1978, shortly after moving to Sonoma, Vic was invited to a friend’s house to help make a barrel of wine. It sparked an interest that developed into a hobby of growing grapes and making wine. During that time, Vic won practically every amateur award and sweepstakes there was to win, which encouraged him to take the commercial winemaking plunge. Castle’s first official vintage was produced in 1993 and was bonded as a commercial winemaking facility in 1994. No longer practicing pharmacology, Vic started out making 250 cases the first year and now bottles 3,500 cases annually.

Castle specializes in small lot premium fruit owned or purchased from 40 acres of estate vineyards throughout the Sonoma Valley and Los Carneros appellations. Vic, along with the growers, conducts ongoing field trials using trellis systems, disease resistant rootstocks and site-specific clone selections to optimize the unique conditions of each vineyard. The name Castle Vineyards & Winery comes from the name of the street where the winery was first located and the original estate vineyard is planted.
