Bristol-Myers Squibb is a pharmaceutical corporation, headquartered in New York City, USA, and founded in 1887. The company was originally Bristol-Myers, until acquiring the Squibb Corporation in 1989.

Products

Bristol-Myers Squibb is a well known manufacturer of pharmaceuticals used in the treatment of various medical illnesses. Some of the areas of therapy which their products treat include:

  • Cancer
  • Cardiovasculars/Metabolics
  • Immunoscience
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Medical Imaging
  • Psychiatric Disorders
  • Nervous System
  • Nutritionals
  • Ostomy Care
  • Wound Therapeutics

Many of Bristol-Myers Squibb's products are the result of their own research and development laboratories, and are subsequently patented and unavailable to the public except by prescription in most cases. In addition, because of the nature of pharmacy in the 21st century and the new attention focused on the industry, not all of their products are available or applicable in every country. Also, any product could be subject to withdrawal after research, be replaced by a more effective product, or become the subject of a new law. Finally, new products are being developed and introduced all the time.

For the reason of these complications, this site cannot list an exhaustive table of their products. It is recommended that the reader visit the site or check the currently listed available products in their locally available pharmaceutical reference.

Website

BMS.com is an expansive website with a large amount of information about their various products and their recommended usage. The many sections and departments of their site reflect the massive complexity of the business of manufacturing and selling drugs.

The site's major sections include a news feed, product information, research and development news, a section for investors and those seeking employment, and a near-endless archive of pharmaceutical information, including product research, medical advisories, recent breakthroughs, clinical trial disclosures, and much more information pertaining to their industry.

History

Originally the company was founded by William McLaren Bristol and John Ripley Myers in 1887. Unexpectedly, their first products were simple toiletries such as mineral salt drink mix and toothpaste. The company ran for two years before turning a profit. It was not until 1924 that their profits topped $1 million. The Great Depression of 1929 wiped this success away temporarily, and they resumed with toiletry items, having divested themselves of pharmacy items.

They returned to pharmaceuticals in 1943 when they purchased Cheplin Laboratories, a Syracuse, New York manufacturer of acidophilus milk. By the conclusion of the War, they had became a key supplier to the U.S. War Production Board’s crash program to mass-produce penicillin for the Allied armed forces. It became clear that penicillin and other antibiotics represented an immense opportunity, and they renamed the company Bristol Laboratories.

From this point on, the company at last set its sites on becoming a major pharmaceutical corporation, and began buying up smaller businesses. In 1986, at last they were able to open a state-of-the-art research complex in Wallingford, Connecticut. This facility could hold 800 scientists and support staff, and became the center of cutting-edge medical drugs research.

Meanwhile back in 1858, a gentleman named Edward Robinson Squibb had founded a pharmaceutical company in Brooklyn, New York, dedicated to the production of consistently pure medicines. Squibb, too, had a long and struggling history, surviving the Great Depression. The Squibb Institute for Medical Research was established in 1938. By 1944, Squibb had opened a penicillin production plant in New Brunswick, New Jersey - the largest in the world.

Finally in 1989 Bristol-Myers merged with Squibb, creating today's global leader in the health care industry. They have since established headquarters in Princeton, New Jersey, and research facilities in Wallingford, Connecticut, and eventually other research and manufacture sites around the world.

Company Philosophy

The site also has an extensive section on corporate responsibility. As you would expect from a company in the business of developing life-saving medicines and treatment, the corporation is involved in health-related philanthropic efforts around the world. The sections touch on:

  • The Patient-Assistance Foundation
  • Fighting AIDS in Africa
  • Corporate Philanthropy
  • Their Commitment to Product Integrity
  • Their Plan for Responsible Growth
  • Their Policy on Health, Safety, and the Environment
  • Medical Education Grants
  • Clinical Research Grants
  • and their positions on many other key issues.

Amongst their many other credentials, they are in the "Top 10 Companies for Working Mothers" list made by Working Mother magazine.

Business Profile

Bristol-Myers Squibb had annual revenues in excess of $17.9 billion in 2006; however, their profits are much lower because of the enormous cost of research and medical testing. They employ 43,000 people in various production and research facilities throughout much of the industrialized world. Fortune 500 ranks them as #110.
