I've been reading some of the commentary around the net after my Wired News piece, and I wanted to put in my two cents, as one of the people that has this.
on the sense: I don't have it anymore, not really. I can sense magnets that are actually pulling on my finger, but the subtle sense of EM fields is gone. I don't expect it to come back at all. Though I never expected magnetism to come back either, it seems unlikely that the scar tissue will be thin enough and the magnet big enough for anything other than the most gross of magnetic fields to do anything to me.
on MRIs: Yes, as I mentioned in the Wired News piece, MRIs are a bad idea. But you're not going to sneak up on me with one- I can sense magnetism, which was the whole point of this. I'm going to know there's an MRI around long before it's in range to hurt me. If I need the MRI, I'll get it removed.
