In our final reflections on the book of Jeremiah, on Every Last Word, we are led to Elijah and his status as a great man of prayer. The Lord used him to bring about many miracles in his day. However, the New Testament testifies that he was just like us! Taking food from poor widows is not an act that usually deserves praise. Although in Elijah’s case, that very act actually does warrant some praise. Elijah did it in obedience to God. God is the one who gives life, but He also takes it away. Often lives are taken without an explanation. This is one of the most difficult issues we as humans have to face.
The appellation 'Postconservative evangelicalism,' (PCE) will be used here as a cognomen, a kind of `family name,` without reference to those who might belong to that family. Perhaps when all is said and done, the shoe described herein will fit no one single individual. More likely, however, is that the shoe will fit different individuals in different ways. I leave it to the reader to make that judgment. The primary purpose of this essay is to warn any who might be teetering on the edge of PCE to move back, and quickly, before they plunge into darkness.
Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847) was one of the most remarkable men of his time—a mathematician, evangelical theologian, economist, ecclesiastical, political, and social reformer all in one. His most famous sermon was published under the unlikely title: “The Expulsive Power of a New Affection.” In it he expounded an insight of permanent importance for Christian living: you cannot destroy love for the world merely by showing its emptiness.
