- Let me start by giving you a little background information on exactly why I began making my own pistol grips. After purchasing a new Kimber CDP II, I decided that I wanted a nice set of custom grips for it…something to set it apart from the others. I went to several gun shows and looked at lots of grips, but I just wasn't satisfied with what I was seeing. After searching the net I ran across a website where someone had made a revolver grip out of Amboyna. That was a pretty grip…and after I saw it I knew what kind of wood I wanted to use. After the first set of grips, I started trying out other types of wood, some of which you can see on the Wood page. I mainly use burl wood scales since they tend to have very unique patterns and colors and make excellent looking grips. Please keep in mind that burl wood grips do have some natural inclusions in the surface.
