- I choose to photograph using an older style 4x5 inch view camera vs. the new 35mm or digital systems commonly used today for several aesthetic and practical reasons. We must keep in mind that a camera is simply a tool, and in no way makes the photographer. A 4x5 inch view camera offers unique advantages to one who wishes to exert more control over the creative process. However these advantages come at a cost due to the cameras increased size, weight, and time necessary to set it up. However the advantages in this photographer's opinion greatly out weigh the disadvantages. For one, the image size of the negative offers a greater record of detail simply not possible in smaller formats. This enables a sharper, smoother image with finer detail and less grain. There is also less of an enlargement factor, thus, larger prints are easily achieved without image degradation.
